This guide compares them side by side, shows where they overlap, and helps you decide where to put your budget. It is written by DigiMark Agency, a Bengaluru agency that runs SEO, AEO and GEO programmes for Indian businesses.
Key takeaways
- SEO is the foundation. Google says pages need no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. If you can't rank, you're unlikely to be cited.
- AEO is about format. You win answer boxes with direct, well-structured answers to specific questions.
- GEO is about trust and presence. You win AI recommendations with evidence, consistent business facts and mentions on third-party sites.
- Measure all three separately. Track rankings and clicks for SEO, answer-box ownership for AEO, and mention rate and citations for GEO.
A note on terminology
These definitions aren't standardised. HubSpot, for example, uses AEO as an umbrella for all answer-driven visibility, including generative AI, and treats GEO as the generative part of it. Wikipedia lists AEO, AIO, LLMO and AI SEO as overlapping names for GEO. In this guide we use the narrower definitions: AEO for direct answers in search features and voice, GEO for AI-written answers. If an agency uses the terms differently, ask it to describe the actual work.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO: the three disciplines in one table
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full name | Search Engine Optimization | Answer Engine Optimization | Generative Engine Optimization |
| Goal | Rank pages in the list of results | Be the single answer shown or read out | Be cited or recommended in an AI-written answer |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results | Featured snippets, People also ask, voice assistants, knowledge panels | ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot |
| What wins | Relevance, links, technical health, page experience | Concise answers, question headings, lists and tables, structured data | Quotable facts and statistics, cited sources, entity consistency, third-party mentions |
| Main unit | Page | Answer block (40–60 words, a list or a table) | Passage, fact or brand mention |
| Key metrics | Rankings, impressions, clicks, CTR | Snippet ownership, PAA appearances | Mention rate, share of voice, citations, AI referral sessions |
| Time to impact | 3–6 months for competitive terms | Weeks once a page already ranks on page one | 1–3 months, faster for on-site fixes, slower for off-site |
SEO: being found
SEO makes a site crawlable, indexable and relevant for the searches that matter to your business. It covers:
- Technical SEO: site speed, mobile usability, crawlability, canonical tags, internal linking.
- On-page SEO: keyword targeting, titles, headings and helpful content that matches search intent.
- Off-page SEO: backlinks, brand mentions and digital PR.
- Local SEO: Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent name, address and phone details.
Everything else is built on this. Google's own guidance for AI features lists ordinary SEO practices: allow crawling, use internal links, keep important content in text, and keep your Business Profile up to date.
AEO: being the answer
AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice search. When someone asks "how much does SEO cost in Bangalore?", an answer engine wants one short, confident answer. AEO shapes your content so that answer is yours.
What AEO looks like in practice:
- Question-led headings that match how people phrase queries.
- An answer in the first 40–60 words under each heading, followed by detail.
- Lists, steps and comparison tables that engines can lift directly.
- FAQ sections covering the follow-up questions real customers ask.
- Structured data that matches visible content (FAQPage, HowTo, Organization, LocalBusiness) where appropriate.
AEO works best on pages that already rank on page one, because answer boxes are usually drawn from top results. That's why AEO normally follows SEO rather than replacing it.
GEO: being recommended by AI
GEO is the newest of the three. The term comes from a 2023 research paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., accepted at KDD 2024). Its tests on a 10,000-query benchmark found that adding quotations, statistics and cited sources increased visibility in AI answers by about 30–40%, while keyword stuffing didn't help.
GEO differs from AEO in two ways:
- AI answers combine many sources. Google describes a "query fan-out" technique where AI Mode runs multiple related searches to build one response. Your brand needs to appear consistently across those sources, not just on one page.
- Recommendations rely on third-party evidence. When someone asks "best SEO agency in Bangalore", assistants draw on directories, review platforms, comparison articles and forums. What other sites say about you carries a lot of weight.
GEO work therefore includes:
- Making sure AI crawlers can reach you. OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers."
- Adding dated statistics, named sources and expert quotes to key pages.
- Keeping the same business details everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, Clutch, Justdial and social profiles.
- Earning mentions in independent lists, roundups and industry media.
- Tracking a fixed prompt set across engines to measure mention rate and citations.

Where SEO, AEO and GEO overlap
The three aren't separate projects. One well-built page can serve all of them:
- Clear structure (headings, lists, tables) helps rankings, answer boxes and AI extraction.
- Evidence (statistics, case studies, sources) builds E-E-A-T for SEO and gives AI answers something to quote.
- Entity consistency (same name, address, hours) helps local SEO, knowledge panels and AI trust.
- Third-party mentions act as backlinks for SEO and as corroborating sources for GEO.
An example from our own work: for a Hyderabad healthcare client, DigiMark Agency combined technical SEO, local SEO and AEO. The site reached 16.6K organic clicks and 1.58M impressions over the engagement (case study). The same structured, answer-first pages that improved rankings are the ones AI engines can quote.
Which one should you prioritise?
| Your situation | Start with | Then add |
|---|---|---|
| New site or weak rankings | SEO (technical fixes, core pages, Google Business Profile) | AEO on pages that reach page one |
| Ranking on page one but losing clicks to AI Overviews | AEO (answer-first rewrites, FAQs, tables) | GEO (evidence, off-site mentions) |
| Strong rankings but not named by ChatGPT or Gemini | GEO (directories, lists, reviews, entity clean-up) | Keep SEO and AEO maintenance running |
| Local business (clinic, salon, venue) | Local SEO and Google Business Profile | AEO for "near me" and cost questions, GEO through reviews and directories |
| B2B or SaaS with long sales cycles | SEO on comparison and problem pages | GEO, because buyers increasingly research shortlists in ChatGPT |
There's a reason to start early on GEO even if SEO isn't finished. In a July 2025 Pew Research Center study, Google users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when none did. As more searches end inside the answer, being named in it matters more.
How to measure each one
- SEO: Search Console impressions, clicks, average position and CTR; GA4 organic sessions and conversions.
- AEO: featured-snippet and People-also-ask ownership for your target questions (most rank trackers report these), and impressions on question queries in Search Console.
- GEO: a fixed prompt set tracked weekly across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, recording mention rate, position and citations. Add GA4 referral sessions from chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com and perplexity.ai. Tools such as Listable Labs automate prompt tracking and competitor share of voice.
Common mistakes
- Treating AEO or GEO as a replacement for SEO. Without rankings and crawlability, there's little for answer engines to use.
- Chasing every new acronym. "AI SEO", "LLMO" and "AIO" mostly describe the same GEO work. Focus on the actions, not the label.
- Writing for machines. Thin, mass-produced pages don't earn citations. The GEO research found keyword stuffing doesn't help.
- Ignoring off-site signals. For "best agency" or "best clinic" questions, AI engines rely on what others say about you.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO optimises content to be the single direct answer in featured snippets, People also ask and voice assistants. GEO optimises your brand and content to be cited or recommended in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, which combine many sources.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, so SEO remains the foundation. GEO adds evidence, entity consistency and third-party mentions on top.
Do I need separate agencies for SEO, AEO and GEO?
Usually not. The work overlaps heavily, so one team running all three avoids conflicting changes. Ask any agency how it measures each one separately.
Which is fastest to show results?
AEO is often fastest on pages that already rank on page one, sometimes within weeks. SEO for competitive terms takes three to six months. GEO on-site fixes can be picked up quickly, while off-site signals take one to three months.
Is AEO part of GEO, or the other way round?
It depends on who you ask. Some, like HubSpot, treat AEO as the umbrella and GEO as one part of it. Others treat them as separate layers. In practice the work overlaps: answer-first content helps both.
Is SEO dead now that AI answers exist?
No. AI answer tools retrieve pages from a search index before they write, and Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no extra requirements beyond normal SEO eligibility. Without SEO, there is little for AEO or GEO to build on.
How can I learn AEO and GEO?
Start with Google Search Central's guidance on AI features and featured snippets, read the original GEO paper (Aggarwal et al., 2023), then practise: pick 20 questions your customers ask, track how ChatGPT and Gemini answer them, and change one page at a time.
Is AI SEO the same as GEO?
Mostly, yes. AI SEO is a common umbrella term for optimising for AI search. It usually covers GEO and parts of AEO.
